The 'low down' on Carl Osborne - part 1

During the convention, Carl came and introduced himself to me. We spent several hours talking during the 3 days, culminating with him giving me a handwritten note of all the chips he 'handled'. He read my article and pointed out many new things to me. That will be updated in time.
The list he gave me is shown below. There are some notable items missing. You will have to read 'part 2' later to understand why.

One of the most interesting points is that Carl never worked at the El Cortez, despite his business card chips indicating he did. He told me "I always fancied having my photograph on a chip, so I asked my friend Jackie Gaughan to have them made for me"
Carl was in fact a pit boss at Binions Horseshoe until just before they closed, moving to the Excalibur for a while after that. He is now a bus driver vbg

At first Carl was reluctant to say too much, preferring to answer 'yes' or 'no' without 'revealing his hand'. As soon as it was clear we knew far more about him than he imagined, we couldnt stop him talking grin Gene is going to continue those discussions over lunch some time.

Explanation of Carl's note. It all started with Bud Jones offering Carl the entire rack (40,000 chips) from the Jockey Club (which you will know never opened, and the chips were never delivered). Carl 'brokered' these on, and then went back for more. He asked for high denom coin center chips, as close as possible in appearance to the originals.
Chips were re-manufactured for Bingo Palace, Castaways, Treasury, Park & Sahara Tahoe and Sahara Reno, in the denominations and quantities noted. Important to note that none of the genuine chips that were re-produced were incused, they were all smooth mold like the reproductions (albeit the differences in sharp vs rounded edges, shiny vs concentric circle centers).
I had become aware that the Sahara Reno chips had been reproduced when I saw some in the Jerry Wall inventory and saw the slightly different version in the Platinum collection (in fact one of each was in Platinum). I had not previously had these listed under the Osborne chips.

Carl explained that when he sold these chips to dealers, some of them asked if he could get lower denominations made also. When he had chips made by Paulson, he got the Mint and Marina made down to the $5 (as I had long suspected and reported).
Paulson also offered him quantities of overruns for the casinos listed below the line on Carl's note. He took those and sold them on also. That explains why so many of those exist in uncirculated condition. Carl stressed that the chips from Bank Club and Hotel Nevada Ely, Hotel Nevada, Sundance and Royal Las Vegas were overruns dating back to when the casinos were open, they were not made for Carl. The 'ALL' on Carl's note refers to 'All denominations'.

If anyone wants the, I have available a few of Carl's 'El Cortez' business card chips, $10 for either color shipped.
I also have a couple of the $100 Sahara Reno counterfeits available at $22 each shipped.
Finally, I have one each only of 3 of the more difficult to find Paulson re-makes. The Mint $25 is $60 shipped, the Mint and Marina $500's are $50 shipped each.
