Bill Borland - The Silver Star and Brown Derby

Following Gene's post, this is the first in a series of posts I will make today with more on the 'low down' of Bill Borland and Carl Osborne grin

We had long suspected that Borland had something to do with the Silver Star Nevada mold chips. Here was a joint that only operated for a couple of months, yet has some 4 x $1, 3 x $5 and 2 x $25 chips attributed to it. I have had the white $1's and red $5's for several years having first come across them in the 'hoard' of Borland chips we acquired all at once. As is usual, these are only ever seen uncirc, with the typical 'bronze' foil (note that it does not show well on scans of light colored chips).
Last year, when we acquired the Borland 'die tag' boxes, sure enough the Silver Star's were among them. Last week in Vegas, I finally uncovered the other denominations I had not seen before, and they were still in Borland's original boxes grin

The genuine rack for the Silver Star are all hat & cane mold. The 5 chips shown below are all counterfeits. I have 3 of each chip only available for sale for anyone interested. Ignore my old website prices - $1's are $10 each, $5's are $12 each, $25's are $15. All INCLUDING shipping from here. A full set of the 5 will be $55 shipped.

Now onto the Brown Derby. The four chips shown at the top of the scan are all genuine. We have long known there was at least one re-order as the colors vary slightly. Note the brown inserts on the $1's differ and match the browns of the $5's. James notes this in his catalog.
The 2 chips shown below them are unmistakeably Borland, for all the usual reasons. The colors of the chips are distinctly different from the genuine ones (doesn't show so well on the scans).
The Brown Derby chips were found with the Silver Star chips above, again in the boxes Borland used, and can be tracked back to Jerry Wall/the Borland estate. I also have 3 each of the Borland chips available - prices $30 each shipped, $55 shipped for a pair.

The 'final proof'. Some examples of both lots if chips discussed have the newer shaped ASM inserts, meaning the blanks were manufactured after the Burt Co was sold, and therefore well after these two casinos closed. These chips could not possibly have been real grin
