Surgery Yesterday

I guess things went ok as I was able to walk out of the hospital again. While the official name is Gamma Knife, I'm not sure what I'd call it. The doctors insist it is surgery. The top picture shows the machine that does the surgery. It also shows one of the guides that is used to align the head. There is one on each side, and 2 doctors and two nurses have to check each setting. It can do 210 different beams of radiation.

The bottom 2 pics show the basic fram screwed to the skull. Getting the fram mounting is the worse part. The numbing of the area where the 4 screws are screwed into the skull is numbed with lanacane (spelling) which hurts like hell. the screwing of the frame does not hurt nor does the treatment.

A MRI is done and a computer program is then written that controls the surgery. The procedure is done in steps. 1st session was about 33 minutes total. 2nd session was about 30 minutes. The remaining sessions took appox 45 minutes. Total time that radiation was applied was 1 hour, 45 minutes.

Upon completion they remove the frame and have you sleep for 1 to 1-1/2 hours to allow the skull to come back to the correct size and shape. They feed you and send you home. The day started at 6am at CINN and ended at 3.30

A big thanks to all the well wishers.

May all at the convention have a great time.

David
