There is a well organized and very vocal group pushing for a smoking ban in all Las Vegas casinos. They succeeded in banning smoking in all restaurants, and bars that have food service, as well as the airport. The casino execs know banning smoking in the casinos will hurt their bottom line. Gambling is a continuous activity (or they want it to be), not like grabbing a bite to eat and leaving after an hour. If patrons have to leave the tables or machines to go outside to smoke, that is an interrupted revenue stream.
I have no problem with segregated areas for smokers and non-smokers (or those smokers who choose not to smoke) like most restaurants have had for decades. Total bans are based in a "nanny" approach to everyday life IMO. IOW, you are too stupid to do what is good for you, so the government will impose laws that take care of it for you. You can still eat or drink yourself to an early grave. You can gamble away everything you own, even going far into to debt in the process. Smokers are the easiest target to go after. The products are still legal, and heavily taxed. The government won't make tobacco use illegal because the tax revenues are too sweet of a money maker. ...but apparently there's nothing wrong with making the use of a legal substance that doesn't impair your ability to function illegal in a growing number of settings. A prime example of how extreme some of the local smoking bans have become is about 100 miles north of me in Boulder Colorado. It is illegal to smoke in your car on a city street with a window rolled down!
Sorry for the rant...but some of this stuff just doesn't make any sense to me.
See ya soon my friend!
