I handled a forfeiture hearing when I was a ASA; the trooper was involved in a stop and they drilled a hole into the quarter panel, and came out with squiggles of cash. The car had $400K hidden it. The two women said they were taking the old beater they obtained in Chicago to Mexico, but didn't know anything about the cash-wasn't theirs.
We confiscated it, no evidence we could hold the girls on, so they went on. Whe it came time for the forfeiture hearing, a lawyer from Chicago appeared onthe girls behalf, signed the papers on their behalf. It was common place apparently to egotiate resolution and division of the cash. My boss and I doubted the girls were even still alive, so we said have the girls show ad we will discuss it. No girls, and we got it all. I bet there were some angry drug dealers when the car sans cash arrived.
