Cant answer the question, but, if its anything

compared say to ebony, mahogany or oak, they harden as any remaining faint moisture of any form has dried out. That occurs from the inside out. On that basis, even if they were only sliced recently they would be hard inside.
However, when I first saw your pics, I wondered with all those tiny marks and dings and the rounded edges, whether this was actually an old blank chip?
