NCR - Matchbook cover phone numbers question

While looking at all the pics that Jim posted of the matchbook covers, I started wondering about some of them that showed phone numbers in different cities. How did those work? Were the calls forwarded to the casino, or did the casino employ people in those cities to answer the phone and make reservations? I found it really interesting that cities like Dallas and Kansas City had multiple phone numbers listed too. And does anyone know when area codes and 800 numbers were instituted? I'm just trying to get a feel for what era some of those matchbooks are from.

Thanks,
Carl
