As an alternative, I went off of the AOL crack pipe ;) a few years back. Got me a DSL line from Pacbell (now ATT) and then eventually went to Charter Cable's broadband product, which for my area is much faster than the DSL line was.
Through this all, I kept my same Yahoo! Mail email account. Pay a bit extra per year to have access to the POP/SMTP servers there, and have them deliver it to my local MS Outlook program through my cable broadband connection. However, the broadband ISP (Charter) also has an online email product (web-based) that I can use if I want to, I just prefer Outlook.
Really, as is the case with most such cults, when leaving the AOL cult, the hardest thing you will probably have to deal with is getting AOL to stop billing your account, and to stop bullying you into staying a subscriber.
