I think that a poster should be able to delete his/her own post ... provided no one has responded to it. One should have the courage of their convictions to stick by their words unless they are correcting a gramatical or a factually incorrect statement.

Once somebody posts a response, the right to delete should go away ... much like a Buy It Now feature on ebay ... once a bid is entered the Buy It Now option disappears.
