I can highly recommend the Microsoft 3000 corded optical mouse. You can pick it up for about $25 at Office Depot. Mine finally gave up the ghost after 4 years of HARD work, and I replaced it, and then bought a spare.
1. It feels good in the hand, even after hours, even though it doesn't look like a traditional mouse.
2. It's got a scroll wheel in the middle, which is handy for documents and web pages.
3. It's got a zoom button on the right thumb. You set the amount of zoom and click with the right thumb and it pops up a magnified window. Click with the right thumb again and the magnified window goes away. Hold in the right thumb and use the index finger for zooming in or out and moving the mouse then makes the window larger or smaller. Totally cool and unbelieveably handy for eBay auctions.
That's my 2 cents.
ps - that's the only thing Microsoft makes that I recommend
