If you dabble in dice collecting, you need to be aware that some dice deteriorate (Jeff Laudeman used the term "imploding dice") . Worse, once they start to go they can speed up the deterioration process in dice around them.
Check your dice every now and then. If they look fine... Sniff 'em... if they've started to smell like vinegar quarentine them! If you think they might be starting to smell like vinegar, but you aren't sure, enclose them in a small plastic box for about a week. When you open the box and smell, you'll know.
Then, feel them. Sometimes they look fine, and they smell o.k., but the dots don't feel flush. Quarentine those too, they've started to go.
Since they were doomed anyway, I tried coating a few pairs of imploding dice with clear nail laquer to see if it might slow down the decay. All it did was make 'em sticky.
NOTE: As far as I know, dice that are starting to crystalize (like our West Side Club dice) do NOT need to be quarentined. The late Jeff "The Diceman" Laudeman advised a coating of clear nail laquer to help preserve/strengthen dice that were crystallized.
