Re: The Avalon Club
It is possible that the Avalon Club in Emeryville, Ca was named for the town of Avalon on Santa Catalina Island. The original founder of the club had in earlier years played ball for the Chicago Cubs, and under Wrigley, Santa Catalina Island had become their Winter training ground. 12 1/2 cent chips seem to show up from the Avalon club more often than any other California cardroom, which is strange... it was only used in the card game of Panguigne, a game similar to gin Rummy, and from 1863 to about 1975 the only card games allowed in California's numerous public cardrooms were five card draw poker (non banked by the house) and Panguigne, sometimes called pan poker.
