I'll concentrate on my story. I started collecting about 10 years ago. I was buying chips on eBay and purchasing reference books, like TCR and The Official Guide to get an idea of prices. I thought I was pretty knowledgeable. I was wrong.
I joined the club about 2 years ago, and had a voracious appetite for the knowledge in the magazine. Recently, I purchased all of the back issues available, and am still reading them. Early this year I started hanging around the ChipBoard. In my first year as a member of the club I learned more about chipping and the history of gambling than in my previous 8 years combined. Since this past January I've more than doubled my knowledge again. I've been checking out books from the library and learning. I've also been asking questions on the board and learning from the answers, as well as the answers to others questions. I've learned that most collectors who are members of the club give their knowledge gladly in support of the hobby in general. They also give in myriad other ways.
I can tell you I like being bound by the code of ethics, so when I make a trade or purchase from another member they are assured they will get my check and that it won't bounce. Most send the chip(s) as soon as the trade or purchase is made, knowing my check is in the mail.
I also take pride in being a member of an organization that is devoted to the hobby. Look at the club's site. Notice that there isn't a 'members-only' section. All of the on-line collecting information is available to everyone. It it's scope is truly amazing. I guess I view the club like I view public radio. It's an organization whose information I greedily consume, so I feel an obligation to support it.
This year will be my first convention. It may be my last. My income is limited to monthly Social Security disability, as well as a small VA payment for a service connected disability. I also live about as far from Nevada as you can get, in central Florida, so it's not only expensive but physically hurts to make the trip as well. But, even if I never go to a convention again, I will maintain my membership in the club both for what I get from it and from what it so generously gives to all collectors.
You are free to make your own decision, and thanks for giving me the opportunity for me to explain why I'm a member.
