The answer is that you need to do your homework. Track eBay and look in dealer's binders.
In June of 2006 there was one guy who most assuredly did NOT do his homework and wound up paying $307 for a $1 Matty's becaused he believed the seller's eBay description (that it was a Las Vegas chip) and had no idea how many were available. If he'd just gotten in touch with, say, Doug Saito, he would have been educated quickly. (Another big part of this hobby is learning who's got what.)
In late August of 2006 there was another eBay auction for the same chip... it went for exactly 99 cents.
You can't take shortcuts in this or any hobby. Do your homework!
