Irregardless of the "interpretations" given to the final episode, leaving it the way they did was a disservice to the normal fans. Your friend put alot of thought into his explanation, and perhaps that WAS the intent of the show. However, most people don't want to think that hard about their shows, especially one like the Sopranos. Personally, I have never seen the show, but addicted friends of mine were livid with the way it ended. Either he gets whacked or doesn't - something should have been resolved. They might as well have ended the series with a "Create Your Own Ending Here" sign.

And for anyone who thinks a movie deal (or some other moneymaking motive) did not play a part is kidding themselves.
