Re: Ok, stupid question time
French Ivory was a very popular in the 20's and 30's. My wife deals in vintage sewing items and many of them are made of French Ivory. It is really an early plastic like material made with lines - or striations - so that it looked like the growth rings in ivory. All the items I have seen have the lines running parallel but I've not seen a chip so they may be circular like a cross cut piece of ivory would be. I had this dealing shoe that was made in Paris. It has a nice little plaque on the side with the Baccarat rules "engraved" on it - it is made of French Ivory. It may be hard to see but you can make out the line in the material.
