Why do the UK clubs like to use 2 1/2 tokens?

In the colonies, the only place I know that had a $2.50 token was Reno Horseshoe in the 1960's. Everyone else used a chip (assuming they had a 2.50). Is there some regulation that requires that in your area, David?
