It really doesn't bother me to hit 4-5 more keys and at the same time allow folks who don't want to hear about my cool bottle cap collection and my hot neighbor to avoid wasting their time on a non-chip-related post.

It's not required, as others have said, but to me, it's just being respectful of others and a generally-accepted convention on the board.
