Hiya Carl, this is a forum where, among other things , we all ask questions and learn things. I've been doing this for a little while and I hadn't seen that Eisenstadt illustration until today. Pretty cool.
Here is a scan of some chips where the inserts were actually painted on. Example #2 shows two red chips manufactured with proper inserts. These painted chips come from the mid-forties and really, no one knows exactly why these critters ended up with the faux inserts. Seems like a lot of extra manhours when inserts were available upon initial order. Sometimes we end up with these little mysteries in this hobby so we do what we did when we came aboard, just keep asking questions and hunting for answers!
