The Ghettos allowed for the prisoners to 'earn' money for extra tasks, but most limited the amount a prisoner could earn in a week. The amount was very small. With this extra money a prisoner could buy cigarettes, chocolate, sewing items, toiletries, etc. The prisoners were paid little and the items were overpriced, but a chocolate bar for your kid, or a needle and thread for that hole in your pants on a cold night could be worth a week's wages.
Each Ghetto had it's own money and it was ONLY good inside the ghetto.
