This is rather scarce 1942 issue Litzmannstadt 5 Mark note used by Jewish prisoners during WWII at the Litzmannstadt Concentration Camp canteen. It is a frail well worn note; prisoners repaired them until they could no longer be used.
The Ghetto (Litzmannstadt) was established in 1940 and was the second largest ghetto after Warsaw. It was located at Lodz, Poland. There were over 300,000 Jews sent to their eventual deaths by January 1945, fewer than 1000 had survived. This note is in poor condition and to me no book could ever come close to determining its value because of what it represents. It was a dark day in human history when this note was in use. Take a minute to think about what this note has seen.
