The Bar of Music, Reno, Nevada, an encased 1945 cent. I’ve seen a matchbook and an ashtray from the Bar of Music, but I’ve never seen a chip. To the best of my knowledge chips from this joint don’t exist. I guess a better way to put it is that chips from this joint haven’t been found… yet. This is a surprisingly easy to find encased. I had been seriously collecting for about a year when I found my first B of M encased. I thought it was a rare piece and probably overpaid for it. These pop up on ebay fairly often. Maybe 5 or 6 times a year. Usually sell for under $15.
Edgewater Hotel & Casino, Laughlin, Nevada. This is a recent piece, a 1989D cent, and probably the newest Nevada Casino Encased Cent. It’s very common and can be added to a collection for under $5. The unusual thing about it is that it has a phone number on it.
The Castaways Hotel & Casino of Las Vegas, and the Sands Motor Inn & Casino of Reno, Nevada. 1970D and 1973D cents respectively. These are the only two Nevada Casino Encased Cents with logos on them. This cost extra for special die work. Unusual. Neither are common, but can be found with a little effort. The Castaways piece was my first Nevada Casino Encased.
Jim Kelley’s Nugget, Reno, a 1957D cent, and Jim Kelley’s Nugget, Reno and Lake Tahoe, a 1963D cent. Both are hard to find. In the upper mid range on a Scarcity Scale. When I can find them I like to add a matchbooks and postcards to my collection. I try to find them from the same general era of the date on the cent. Here’s one from the Nugget.
Actually, it sounds like a pretty good lunch to me. And across the street was Harold’s Club.
There are three varieties of Harold’s Club encased cents. The two shown above both have a 1946 cent. The differences are subtle. Look at the Y in the word PLENTY and note its position to the U in the word CLUB above it. This suggests two separate orders and separate die work. I believe the Harold’s Club encased was the first Nevada Casino Encased Cent. Both are fairly easy to find, and usually sell for under $10
This is the third variety of the Harold’s Club encased. For years every Harold’s Club encased I saw had a 1946 cent. Then I found this one with a 1985 cent. Note the difference in the font size & style, and the different spacing. Obviously a reorder of a successful promotional give-away or gift shop item.
In my post of Gambling Encased Cents Part Duex I showed some of what I call “Souvenir of…” encased cents. I thought the Las Vegas, Nevada piece with a backward D in the word Nevada wasn’t an error piece because all the examples I’ve ever seen had the backward D. Now I’m not too sure about that. Look what I received in the mail today! This is the only one I’ve ever seen with the D correctly positioned. What a find and what an addition to my collection! Doug Deems of Kingman, Arizona sent it to me. Nice Bunny style too! Doug, what can I say? I owe you, I owe you, I owe you!
