Hi Todd; I'm not sure that the words "In God We Trust" are truly upside down. If the edge lettering is struck in a separate operation from the actual coin, I think that it's a matter of randomness which side is up and which side is down when the "In God We Trust" is applied.

I used to collect early U.S. Half Dollars with lettered edges and found this to be the case.
