Ed's site and Ed's book was compiled in a different time. It was done without records. It was done by word of mouth. Sorta like the kids game "Psst Pass It Around." Ed will be the 1st to tell you this.
Many of the ID's have proven right but many are now proven not so right. Ed's book and site is a wonderful guide for us but Ed did not have the tools or time needed to research all of the entries. Same for TGT. They are guides. They were written as a work of love for our hobby.

There are about a dozen of us that send chips to each other when we get new ones. If Ed gets a new find, I can count on one being in the mail in a few days. No mention is ever made of $.

It hasn't been too many years since someone would send me a chip and say its from Bill's in KC. I would say how do you know? He would say Sam says so. Good enough for me.

But:
I would send the ID to Allan Myers.
He would come back with I already got a different ID from George. Some how the "Psst Pass It Around Game" just did not always work out when it came to ID's.
Many ID's came from sellers that could charge more if the chip had an ID so of course it would get an ID.

I have been a major debunker of some of these ID's. I called it "How to make friends and Influnce people 101"

After ebay came along I would get a package from Kenny Craig every few months with 30, 40, etc new UFC's regularly. I would depend on Ed's site for some ID's, Herz's Hub records for some, and Pass It Around for some. Some I made 100's of phone calls to the city I thought the chip was from. My phone bills were herrendous in those days.
Today we have the internet for searching and we have some distributors records. The records can sometimes tell you things that are actually not in the records. Like the IMO on Il and KY Colony Clubs.
IMO the zigzag is a UFC unless the CA boys have it listed there.
To me a illegal with a bad ID is just another UFC.
Maybe I've become too much a purist. It was more fun back then. When I get time I probably have 200 to 300 chips I need to move into my UFC file.
