If chip value is of primary importance to you...

this is true. It is also probably true if choosing between chips in your area of focus (the higher value chips have a greater tendency to increase in value over time). However, 10 $10 chips in an area you are focused on may be better than a $100 chip you only have a passing interest in, in terms of collecting. Given a choice of a $50 chip in my area or 5 $10 chips, I would probably pick the $50 chip now. When I started out, it was probably the other way around, because I had so many common chips to get in my collecting areas. Sometimes, I just like some of the cheap chips I buy more than some of the more expensive ones (aesthetics or some sentimental reasons). It really depends upon you.
