Tonight’s selection is a 2006 issue 50 Zlotych from Poland. It is Poland’s first commemorative note ever issued. The note is causing quite a stir in the banknote societies because the note has a 50 Zoltys face value but the National Bank of Poland is selling them for 90 Zoltys. The United Stated Mint has been doing the same thing for quite some time.
Karol Wojtyla was elected pope on 16 October 1978, becoming the Catholic Church's first non-Italian pontiff in over 450 years and history's first Slavic pope.
The face of the note contains a portrait of the Pope performing a greeting gesture, against the background of a stylized globe, which is a symbol of his pontificate's universal nature. The reverse of the note shows a scene of Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski paying homepage to the Pope, which emphasizes the Polish context of this pontificate.
This note has a watermark of the Vatican, UV coding, and security thread, it is UNCirculated and I expect will carry a book value of around $45.00+. ENJOY!
