Mark, after being a heavy smoker for 35 years, this March 27th will mark my 20th year of being a non-smoker.
I did it cold turkey. As most people will testify, it was the hardest thing I ever did and I will spare you the details.
But let me give you this one piece of advice.
You, and only you, must convince yourself that this is what you want to do. If you are not really mentally up to it (in other words, unless you really want to quit,) you won't.
I had nothing wrong with me prior to quitting and to this day, I can't seem to say that I feel any better by quitting. That could be because I gained so much weight since then. But I and my wife are both glad I did as it is a "stinky, smelly habit" and not socially acceptable (at least in my circle of friends and acquaintences.)
I am 100% convinced that smoking will shorten ones lifespan and even though one quits after many years of smoking, harm has been done to ones body already and can never re repaired. The lungs are just one small body organ that is involved.
I do believe cold turkey is best. If you can abstain for at least the first month, you should be able to go all the way. Millions have done it and so can you.
Good luck
