When I lived on Long Island, I worked for a physical therapy office that was contracted with the FDNY. Those guys are amazing. I wear my FDNY Squad 288 shirt, that was given to me by a member of the squad, every 9/11. The oddest commute of my life was 9/12/01. With traffic my commute was normally 50 minutes to go 20 miles. On 9/12 it took 23 minutes.
