I hope wherever he is, he is running fast again somewhere.....

If Barbaro was running 5K claimers, he would have been euthanized a long time ago. I do think his owners are good horse people, and felt like Barbaro deserved every reasonable opportunity to recover, and, true to their word, they put him down when it was obvious the fight was over. I think their actions were reasonable.

I am an advocate of changing the way they run these young horses. The powers that be in racing are sticklers for tradition, so I don't think things will change, but if I had it my way, I would limit the 2 year olds to a few short races and increase the time between the Triple Crown Races. The run up to the Derby is way to grueling. I have heard it argued that maybe they should run the Triple Crown for 4-year olds. I never liked the idea, but I think that if it will cut down on some of these devestating injuries, to heck with the tradition. I love the sport, but I think it is time to ease up a bit on these young horses, and give them a chance to grow strong.
