it was undergoing restoration. It was quite remarkable to see the difference between years and years of candle soot build-up and it's removal. Even then, flash photography was prohibited. I remember setting my camera to wide open, placing it on the floor and setting the shutter to it's slowest speed (other than time exposure) to get pictures.

As for "sneaking another guess"... It never crossed my mind.
