Two good ways to check for true variety are:

1) Look at the chips with UV light
2) Look at the green area with a magnifying glass. Older printing was done with a solid color ink and the new stuff is done using many different color dots that appear green from a distance.

Of course, those aren't the only ways to be sure of a variation, but they are two ways that are easy to show others.
