The answer is no, I would not. Not that I would;t make a deal that was beneficial to both parties. However, if you restated it as would you buy a $1,000 chip for $20 if the seller was a complete jerk", then I would have to rethink my answer. If someone is buying chips with the intent of reselling, the person will obviously need to make a profit. Is a dealer expected to buy at retail prices and sell at a loss? No. Is he going to invest monies and sit on chips for time? Yes. Does he have expenses, and time involved? Yes.
There are different circumstances. If I run into a chip in an antique mall that is priced at $3.50, and I know it's very valuable, would I tell them? No. I would not. They should have done the research. They offered the chip at a price, and I am accepting it.
The world is different when it comes to fellow collectors. I run into chips in fellow collectors trader books all the time that are long obsolete, and in with current chips being traded as current chips. I tell them that the chips are obsolete. I have run into rare foreign chips in trader books, and again, I have pulled them out and handed them to that person and told them.
I have also done the same thing with dealers. Nobody can know all the chips. Sometimes things get mixed up by accident. I wouldn't want people to take advantage of me, so in turn, I live my live trying not to take advantage of others. You see, contrary to what some might think, this hobby is not all about money. There are friendships. There is honor and there is personal integrity. Some have it, some don't. As for me....I'm of the silly old world belief that what goes around comes around.
Okay, that all said, I commend you on disclosing the numbers. I commend you on your generosity of sending one out to the person that helped you.
My post on the effect of chip numbers to value was not meant as a personal attack on you, I hope you didn't take it as such. I was meant as an explanation as to why everyone was so interested , and why there was negative sediment when you appeared to some that you were holding back information.
