I believe the difference between the great brass core debacle and the purchase of these chips at the Palms show is that there was no misrepresentation involved. These chips were bought as altered chips and not actual casino chips.
Now of course, as the years tick off, these will undoubtly find their way (mostly likely without deception intended) into the marketplace and will be thought of as real chips. That is the real harm, but as long as people buy them, and there is no rule against creating them, then that is inevitable. The only thing we can do it document them to the best of our ability and perhaps someday find an easy way to distinguish between the fakes and the real thing.
