Here's a couple I've got from '05, hope you guys don't mind me horning in here. Loved that phone book deal Pam!
You were pretty lucky to have taken those photos Jim, you won't find those scenes in Wells today. Took a vacation about '03 and woke up in Jackpot, hit Wells then Wendover, stayed overnight at Parker's Model T in Winnemaucca and on to Reno. Wells' Main St. was unmolested at the time and I didn't realize that the unmarked building on the corner was Bullshead so I missed the opportunity to get a pic. When I returned a couple of years later with more knowlege of the town things were a little different. Some folks with a lot of enthusiasm and a lot of new paint had umm, spruced up the place. Sigh. They went to town on the Wells Hotel sign and changed that around a bit. Didn't have the artistic chops to dupe the original bull on the sign so's we got a dead Midwest longhorn critter that Cigarman might like up there instead. Did find the old guy looking out the window just around the corner though, hard tellin' what those Wells folks have done with him by now.
Got a connection to Wells several years ago and really like the place. Took one of those trips you don't forget before I learned to gamble or came to collecting. Hauled a tanker load of nasty chemicals over to VW&R in Missoula and swapped the empty for a clean skin tank wagon at the terminal we had in Pocatello. Went down the road to one of those towns in Idaho that aren't on any maps and put on a load of phosphoric for Oakland. Dropped down through Twin Falls for my first sight of Jackpot and found myself in Wells in just after midnight somewhat past my legal hours of service. Since I was a "local" driver , I didn't have a sleeper cab and my layover was federally regulated to 8 hours out of the cab. I don't know much but the "Truckers Welcome" sign pointing down the street to someplace called The Ranch Villa (not Donna's, the other one) just kind of signaled that while the place had plenty of beds, sleep wasn't what they offered. Old reliable Motel 6 was up some dark dirt road and since I didn't want to get stuck in a dead end, I turned into the ubiquitous Flying J truckstop and stretched out on the seats till morning. Took off, got fuel at Sierra Sid's and headed off over the precipice of Donners. Luckily an Old Hand had showen me the way down Donner's Pass before and I got 50 thousand pounds of acid down to the bottom of the hill with out too much drama. Anyway, I always remembered Wells and since I got into the hobby I've been lucky enough to return to the place several times and learn much more about the town. There was that excellent article in CCTN and another great one about Bullshead later by Mark Engelbretson and you can Google up the history from the town's website. Main Street isn't quite the same experience that it was before all the "fixing" but still a nice way to spend part of a day for us chippers. BTW, the candidate who joins me in advocating locating our future clubhouse at The El Rancho Hotel there in Wells has my vote!
