We used to have "Turtle" Drags at school in the spring (circa late 1950's). You'd tweak the carb back to where it was just loping and about to stall and the slowest car would win. Kind of like letting the radiator fan pull you along. So many guys entered it'd take several days at lunch to come up with the winner.
My old two door 1950 Merc was "planed," on a "rake," and "bull nosed" and it was painted lime green. We'd cruise Highland Avenue from Ruby's up Sierra Way to A&W...back and forth most of the night listening to Wolf Man Jack. I had a pair of the manditory argyle dice hanging from the mirror too and the "TJ tuck and roll" - in white (big mistake). You know something? That thing was made of real Detroit steel. Today's cars you can "oil can" the metal, not the oldies.
Thanks Ralph and Butch for stirring up those oldies for me. Now back to the wedding planning for Saturday.
