There is an interesting story as to one of the main reasons Australia (and other South Pacific countries) started using plastic currency and it was told to me by an Aussie i used to work with.

SInce a hefty percentage of Australians live on the coast it was not uncoomon for people to take a quick dip in the sea....with wallets in the pocket!!!

The fact the notes are virtually indestructable might have something to with it as well
