If over 500+ club members indicated they were in favor of ANY subject related to this hobby ... I think the elected club officers would pay attention to their desires ... much like elected representatives in our government should be paying attention to what is on their constituent's minds.
When elected candidates for office pledge that they supported such a positon in their campaign promises, which a significant number of their constituents endorse ... it should come as no surprise when those positions become a matter of policy. Conversely, if any club member (or group of club members) takes the opposite position ... then it becomes incumbent upon those members who think alike to put up a candidate for office who supports their point of view. That's how the democratic system works.
To my best recollection ... there was very little support in favor of the slabbers during the last two club elections ... which still remains true today.
