Actually, it was quite a few years back, around 1972 or '73. I was a 75c an hour cook at the Sonic in Bartlesville, OK. Onion prices were through the roof and we were losing money on each order of onion rings that we sold. They were our signature item so it made no sense to quit selling them or to double the price. The idea was to introduce a new item that was similar, (breaded and deep fat fried), hoping it would replace some of the onion ring sales.
My boss heard that the A&W was selling fried pickles. He sent me to get an order of them. I did and we reverse engineered them and called them pickleos.
