I would clean the coin to free it of dirt on the surface, but would not do any polishing or even heavy scrubbing. To me getting dirt off of my coins is different than trying to polish the appearance.

You can take a picture/scan of one side, then flip the coin over on the scanning bed, then place the first scan/picture on top of the coin so that the first scan is to one side of the coin when you rescan it.
