Wow. That sounded like a nightmare! You are lucky you didn't get squashed.

I keep most all of my chips at the bank too as I have a lot of teenagers in and out of my house and don't want stuff to turn up missing. I was at this auction last saturday and couldn't pass up this thing for $75.00.

I was thinking that if I left it in the garage, I wouldn't put any chips in there (because of the heat) but use it for important papers and other document storage.

But that humidity issue that you bring up is a good one. (It's always something isn't it!?!) :-)

When we were moving it around in my garage (using a heavy duty fork lift), we had the door swung open and it fell off it's hinges/pins. Holy cow... we both could barely get the door picked up and put back on it's hinges. One guy can't even budge the safe when it's on smooth concrete.

My buddy owns a pallet mfg company and luckly he has trailers and big moving equipment.

Another side note to this story: After I bought it and got it to Robert's pallet company for a couple of days, I didn't have any of the combinations for either spin dial and it was locked shut! I called Auction company and they said I was S.O.L. I called locksmith and they said they would have to drill above both spin dials to figure out the combo and then patch the holes. At $100 per hour and they said it could take up to six hours... Ok... Now I know why no one wanted this thing. lol. On the side of the safe was a note that indicated what looked like a store number. I made calls to Wal-Mart corporate office, call to that store, another call to corporate office, another call to store and finally I got the combo! Whey. It almost went to salvage.
