I've hand carried chips all over the country. Of the 30 or 40 times I've done it I've had my bag inspected about 80% of the time. The reason is that the machines can't see through the chips. Due to the material they are made out of they show up as black spots on the screen and cause most security personel to inspect the baggage. Leaving Vegas tends to be a lot easier than getting in. You can tell they get a lot of people with chips. Sometimes they just ask 'Do you have chips in there?' and after saying yes they just let you through. Other times they will search everything and then test every chip for explosives with those swabs. Regardless they're not going to not allow them on and the worst that will happen is that you have to repack your bag.
