Thank you, Robert, and welcome to the club!
If you want to go see the Moulin Rouge, you certainly should! Granted, I wouldn't want to go at night, nor would I spend a lot of time poking around the place. The casino was destroyed by fire a few years ago, but the marquee is still there, as you said. We took this picture of the building in the late 1990's. The hotel/motel rooms are used as cheap housing. Last time we went there was a security guard stationed at the parking lot to let cars in...or maybe stationed there to keep the worst elements out?
If you do go, it's at 900 W. Bonanza Road, you might as well go a little further up Bonanza to 2040 which was Benny Binion's house. When we went in April, there was a sold sign on the house. The house has been neglected for over 15 years, and it shows. Hopefully the new owner will restore it, but more likely they'll tear it down . There's a historical plaque by the fence that tells you a little about it.
(Disclaimer: I bought the Moulin Rouge swizzle stick in Las Vegas, but it doesn't say Las Vegas...so it might not be from that Moulin Rouge.)
One more thing that might interest you...go to the campus of UNLV, to the Lieds (sp?) Library. Go to "Special Collections" on the 2nd or 3rd floor. (search the internet for details) You can browse through albums with pictures of old Vegas, they have old documents there, all kinds of cool old stuff . We were only there once, but I'd love to go again.
