Comments on TITO Slot Tickets

Thought I'd post a couple of experiences with the machine-printed tickets from TITO slot machines in Nevada.

Many (most?) of these have expiration dates on them after which they supposedly won't be cashed. I took in an $11 ticket from Peppermill, Reno last week. Even though it was already fading, the cashier looked up the number, printed out the results of her search, stapled it to the ticket and cashed it. She commented that the machines would not accept an expired ticket.

Playing at Venetian last week in Las Vegas, I printed out a ticket of about $1200 and tried to move to another $5 machine. The machine displayed a message that that machine was "temporarily not accepting tickets". I asked at the high-limit cashier and was told their machines won't take a ticket of over $1000 value. It was cashed, of course, but this seems to be contrary to the spirit of the TITO process, which was to make it easy to change machines. I'm guessing this is an attempt to minimize losses from counterfeit tickets. Has anyone heard of counterfeits being successfully passed?
