...bring us some NEW ones! Wordplay on Steve Martin ordering wine.
I have been enjoying the old matchbooks and have a bunch myself. The mb's all sit in the coin cups I don't collect either amongst the slot cards and room keys I don't etc.
BUT! I also have a bunch of newer vintage matchbooks that I'm kind of fond of and I'll bet some are seldom seen. Top pic has Sturgeon's which is slots now followed by Truck Inn. I've slept in my Mack at Truck Inn, that latex haul down to Empire that time and this year was the first time I just blew by the place without a meal stop. Horseshu with the stonefaced dealers and Winners from that vacation trip from Wendover to Verdi.
Best thing about these newer ones is that I picked them out of the actual joints during my travels. Got the chips to go with most of them but the sad fact is that some are merely slot casinos now. In fact, I don't remember seeing the Silverado when I careened through through Fernley last Sunday so perhaps... Got my Reno Hilton before the upcoming name change and hope one day to play at the Model T table with that Pippi Longstocking dealer telling why she likes dealing to the Banditos rather than
any drunk female! .
Skipping around to the lake, I got to play at Crystal Bay, a great place to step back in gaming time and stand on the sidewalk and see all the building features that take you right back to the '60's. Turn around from Lincoln Fitzgerald's place and imagine the autos carrying Sinatra, Giancana, Monroe and sundry Kennedy's around back of the Cal-Neva. If'n you find yourself at Southshore, take Kingsbury Grade over to Gardnerville for some meat and potatoes at a Sharkey's chip table, that'll hold you all the way to El Capitan, no problem. Meet up with those nice Bracken folks at the next convention, they'll fill you in on
that place!
Okay, I'll admit I
bought the MGM book as I was way over my head casino-wise when I stayed there in the mid 70's. Just remember a big stack of roulettes they kept shoving my way (jeez, I'm a'scared to look them up in the guides these days) and all the $$$ I won that very first day at the table. Don't miss these Reno places when you get there...and get some sticks too.
Mostly though, you'll want to collect these little things because it may be you last visit to that particular place. The Ho got scraped off the face of the earth as you know and speaking of knowing, I don't think those poor folks had any idea that the Sundowner was gonna shut on them a couple of weeks after I walked out. Always wonder how that nice lady dealing to me fared. Guess there's always another place next door for her, and me and you too!. Walk in, latch onto some memories and take away one those
new matchbooks.
