It probably isn't a variation, but rather an earlier/later run of the chip. I hadn't thought of that when I posted.

I never tried cleaning the inlay on the chip on the left, using an old toothbrush with some soap to see if any dirt came out. Nothing changed.

Maybe one of the experts will respond...
