It is my understanding that until very recently (after the poker boom), some of the clubs originated as bridge, backgammon or even chess clubs. One of the new ones still had backgammon games. I will still go with "underground clubs" since that is what people call them here. I think of the poker rooms/clubs as being the legal poker clubs in California. JMHOBICBC. Just my humble opinion but it could be changed.
