My daughter's workload throughout the year was tremendous (she's a freshman in high school). Her school actually provided two sets of books at the beginning of the year...one set for school and one to keep at home so they don't have to lug 20 pounds of books around each day.

With regards to the quantity and difficulty of her homework and studies...a lot of it and it was not easy (I know as up until these past two weeks, I reviewed all of her homework & provided "guidance" where possible). Next year, whatever she doesn't "get", she'll be getting a tutor to assist her as it's all beyond me now!!
