I think I agree with both of you.

1) I believe a student today WHO DOES A GOOD JOB AND MAKES GOOD GRADES will probably learn as much as a student from many years ago.

2) I beleive that a student today who does a poor job and learns very little is MUCH more likely to be promoted through the system now than they would have many years ago.
