I played online for very small stakes (such that I wasn't terribly upset about losing) when I did not have easy access to real world poker. I was an hour and 45 minutes from a brick and mortar casino and though I played in local games they operate on their own schedule.

I fully understand why people play online poker, I just don't understand why they are not more skeptical of it.
