Steam Locomotive Nears End of 3,800-Mile Tour
After nearly a month on the road, Union Pacific's historic steam locomotive, No. 844, is working its way back to its home base in Cheyenne, Wyo. The 35-day, 10-state South Central States Heritage Express Tour celebrates the railroad’s history and heritage. The 3,800-mile trip took the locomotive to many communities in Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Texas for the first time.

Following is the final portion of the schedule:

Friday, May 26 -- North Little Rock, Ark., to Russellville, Ark.
Saturday, May 27 -- Russellville, Ark., to Claremore, Okla.
Sunday, May 28 -- Claremore, Okla., to Kansas City, Mo.
Monday, May 29 -- layover and display, Kansas City, Mo., Union Station, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Tuesday, May 30 -- Kansas City, Mo., to Fairbury, Neb.
Wednesday, May 31 -- Fairbury, Neb., to North Platte, Neb.
Thursday, June 1 -- North Platte, Neb., to Cheyenne, Wyo.
A Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) transmitter installed on one of the rail cars has been integrated with a map on UP’s Web site at www.up.com. Visitors can access route maps that are updated every five minutes showing No. 844’s location.
